INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)

ICSI is a technique used to assist fertilization when sperm problems exist. ICSI involves the direct injection of a single sperm into each egg. The process of sperm injection bypasses several steps in the mechanism of sperm-egg interaction and allows fertilization rates that are equivalent to those achieved by normal sperm fertilizing naturally. Once fertilization of the egg has occurred using this procedure, the pregnancy rate depends mostly on female factors. ICSI is used at the time of IVF whenever a male factor is known or suspected.
