STIMULATION AND IUI
One
of the initial treatments for unexplained infertility, mild to moderate
male factor, and age-related infertility is ovarian stimulation
and intrauterine insemination (IUI). The ovaries are stimulated
with clomiphene citrate or human menopausal gonadotropins to produce
several eggs during the treatment cycle. after laboratory preparation,
sperm are placed into the upper uterine cavity at the time of ovulation.
This type of treatment increases the chance for pregnancy by increasing
the number of eggs released, the number of sperm that reach the
uterus and fallopian tubes, and perhaps by correcting occult ovulatory
defects. If pregnancy ensues, it usually occurs within the first
three treatment cycles.
